CHARACTER TOYS AND COLLECTIBLES - Second Series
by David Longest, Collector Books, KY, 1987 / 1990.
“This book is intended to be a companion volume to the first edition of
    Character Toys and Collectibles
.”  Material presented herein does not duplicate items found in the first series.  Emphasis on availability helps collectors focus their searches in realistic ways.  Entirely new areas for this volume are “Hollywood Personality Collectibles” dealing with character toys inspired by movie stars such as Charlie Chaplin, Shirley Temple, Jane Powell, Rock Hudson, Dionne Quintuplets, Betty Grable, and more.   “Kewpie Collectibles” introduces the collectibles inspired by Rose O’Neill’s Kewpie characters.  Chapters on “Disney Comic Character Collectibles” and Disney Feature Film Collectibles” present more items along with information on contacting collectors’ clubs.  The text on “Western Heroes” has been rewritten to include Hopalong Cassidy, Red Ryder, Gene Autry, the Lone Ranger, Roy Rogers and Dale Evans, and more.  More attention is given to radio and TV character collectibles such Charley Mc Carthy, Howdy Doody, Paul Winchell and Jerry Mahoney, Sharie Lewis and her puppets, Jackie Gleason, I Dream of Jeannie, etc.  Extensive treatment is also rendered to comics characters such as Dick Tracy, Popeye, Batman, Flash Gordon, Tarzan, Superman, Buck Rogers and more in a chapter titled “Heroes of Earth and Space.”  This is a carefully photographed set, with captions “to help the reader identify the toy by a second means other than the picture itself.  Certain features of toys are discussed along with measurements to give collectors an overall view of the toy.  The chapter texts and discussions of toys are designed to inform the reader about each individual specialty area of collecting.”
Price guide information is relative to condition and approximate for date of publication.  Information on collector’s clubs, museum collections and other public access is given.  A good bibliography rounds out this authoritative and collector-conscious presentation of character toys.
